A quiet stop on the Delphi Riviera, fifteen minutes east of Nafpaktos
Most people drive past it. And that's fine. Monastiraki has been here a long time and it will still be.
It's a small fishing village on the Gulf of Corinth, part of the Fokida region, 12 to 15 kilometres east of Nafpaktos along the coastal road. Easy to miss. Worth stopping for.
What's there
A small harbour. Fishing boats. Tavernas where the food is simple and comes from the sea that morning. A beautiful laguna nearby will definitely impress your eyes and it is just a simply gorgeous village.
We arrived on a windy morning with no particular plan and stayed longer, as it happenes to us frequently in Greece. These kinds of places have a way of doing that.
When to go
Morning, when the light is still low and the water is calm. Or late afternoon, just before the sun drops behind the mountains across the gulf. There's no rush either way.
How to get there from Chilladou, the home of Orama Oikos
The road between Chiliadou and Monastiraki is is a quieter back route through the fields of the Mornos plain, flat all the way, which is not something you take for granted in Greece. Perfect for a bycicle ride. We're planning to do exactly that ourselves, and we're planing to put together a small fleet of bicycles for our guests that want to explore the nearby villages at their own pace.
Why it matters to us
Places like Monastiraki are exactly why we chose this corner of Greece. Not famous, not loud, not on any must-see list. Just real and close enough to feel like yours for an afternoon.
Take the turn. You'll understand once you are there.
