Kanali Beach Bar & Restaurant, Poros Island. Skip the Menu

Kanali Beach Bar & Restaurant in Poros Island.

How a parking ticket led us to one of the best meals we've had in Greece

We weren't even supposed to eat there.

We closed the menu. Told them to bring whatever they wanted. Best decision of the day.

The Accidental Recommendation

We'd spent the afternoon doing Poros properly, parked the car, had a coffee, wandered the narrow alleys all the way up to the clock tower. Classic Greek island afternoon.

On the way back we started looking for a taverna. And then we found a parking ticket on the windshield. 🥹

The nice policeman suggested we move the car. Helpful. But where to park, and more importantly, where to eat?

My friend Google Maps to the rescue. I spotted something called Kanali Beach Bar & Restaurant, further from the main town, sitting right on the beach. Read the reviews, looked at the photos. That was it. Decision made.

Far From the Crowd, On the Beach

Kanali is not where the tourists cluster. It's away from the main harbour, quieter, on the water. You only find it if you're looking, or if you get a parking ticket at the right moment.

We were welcomed immediately. It made us feel like we've been coming for years, not minutes. They walked us through what they had that day, catch of the day, mentioned very proudly, and handed us the menu as a formality.

We closed the menu.

Told them to bring whatever they wanted, whatever they were proud of. They didn't seem surprised. They seemed pleased.

What Arrived at the Table

Everything made our mouths water. Fresh, simple, exactly what Greek food is supposed to be.

I'm not going to list every dish. That's not the point. The point is that it belongs on a very short list of favourite places to eat in Greece.

Our Tip for Kanali

Skip the menu. Tell them what you don't eat and let them bring what they're proud of. That's the real experience, not choosing from a list, but trusting the people who caught it that morning.

Poros Island is wonderful on its own. But Kanali makes the whole day complete.
